I’m really excited about this plugin! I have had serious bot traffic affecting my website. Install of the plugin was effortless, updated my robots.txt file and can access the blackhole link. The first attempt to test was a failure; the link took me to my homepage and nothing more. I deactivated SiteGround supercacher; still doesn’t work. Deleted the SG cache plugin; still doesn’t work. Deactivated a few plugins that may be caching; still doesn’t work. I’ve ran out of ideas to try and make it work. Any suggestions? Is there any advantage in trying the pro version? I really think this is a clever way to mitigate bad bots. I also would love to be able to use this plugin with the SG cache plugin too. Any help is appreciated!!

Glad to help. I’m not sure what might be interfering with normal functionality, but in general a good way to test is to set up a default WP site. Leave everything (e.g., settings, plugin, theme, et al) at the default values. Then try again with Blackhole, you will find it working normally. So from there you can begin adding your other plugins, one at a time, re-testing between each. At some point you should discover which plugin/theme is causing problems and take appropriate action, etc. Also FYI here is a guide to which cache plugins are compatible with Blackhole. I hope this helps, let me know if I can provide any further infos!

    Thanks Jeff for the info.

I just finished up deactivating all plugins on my staging site; still not working. I searched the support forum to see if maybe the theme was the issue even though I changed it too. Any chance you know if this plugin is compatible with Flatsome theme? Also, is there a way to test what is blocking the link from working besides the manual process of deactivating plugins?

There are basically two approaches to troubleshooting things (in general):

    1) The easiest way in my experience is to install WP and build up from scratch. It allows the simplest case: the plugin working normally. So you can continue adding plugins and retesting between each, change the theme and so forth. At some point you will know exactly where things are breaking. This is a direct way to identify the problem. And the bonus is that doing it will not affect your other site.

    2) The other way is the usual troubleshooting routine, where you de-activate plugins/theme and so forth on your current site until something clicks. The disadvantage of this technique is that there may be confounding factors — more than one plugin/theme involved. So it really depends on how you go about testing, digging, etc.

From my perspective, the first route is the surest way to see where things are falling apart. The other way works too but requires more work depending on the setup, plugins, etc. Also re: Flatsome theme, not sure haven’t heard anything either way.
