• Would you consider extending this plugin to display files from web hosted folders (uploaded via FTP)? I love the way Photonic displays my images (currently hosted on Goole Photos) but I can’t find another free solution that is compatible with Photonic.
As I already have wordpress space, I figure the sensible (free) option is to store my images in local folders – potentially these can be uploaded and maintained by another web application – but that Photonic can display subfolders of images as albums.

    kind regards

    Guy

This has been asked a few times in the past – the answer is “No”. Note that every photo-hosting platform provides several features that a folder-based solution doesn’t. E.g.:

    • Albums have descriptions/captions, as do photos.
    • Multiple photo sizes are supported.
    • Photo metadata includes the dimensions of the photos.

For Photonic (or any true gallery plugin) to work effectively, a lot of the above needs to be in place.

but I can’t find another free solution that is compatible with Photonic.

What about Flickr? That has been supported since V1 of Photonic, released in 2011.

I tried Flickr yesterday, but photonic asked me for the API key, and when I tried to get that from Flickr I get the below message:

“In order to mitigate abuse, API key creation is currently disabled for free accounts. API key creation is available to all Flickr PRO subscribers.” – Currently at £8.79 per month, or £60 per year! (definitely not free)
