The methods in that article do not require access to the WordPress dashboard, they can use either mysql access via phpmyadmin or file level access via FTP or whatever file management tools your host has provided you with.

I’m fond of this method myself.

If you do use that method, please make a backup of your theme’s functions.php file first.
