I know you’ve tried different browsers, have you tried incognito mode or safe mode, or whatever each browser calls the similar concept? Are the other devices that do work also connected through the same Wi-Fi, IP gateway, or common intranet?

While it does seem to be a local issue, you could try switching to a default twenty* theme and deactivating all plugins. Just in case one of them is interfering for some strange reason.

On the chance switching themes and deactivating plugins doesn’t help, I would then suspect the issue could be with your WP account. Do you have any other user credentials you could try?

I neglected to address how you’d change themes and deactivate plugins if you cannot log in. It’s done through FTP or your hosting file manager. Rename /plugins/ folder and your current theme’s folder. You do need one of the twenty* themes also installed. If not, you can manually install it by uploading all the theme’s files.

It is possible to reset your password through several alternative means, but with most you need to know your username or ID. If that got corrupted somehow, you may not know what it currently is.

In the above linked page, look at the phpMyAdmin section. It allows you to see all users and change any user’s password. Thus you don’t need any WP user information to start with, just the ability to open phpMyAdmin, usually through your hosting account.

    many thanks – problem solved!

the web address id saved to access the login was too blame for some reason. I entered is afresh and then it worked. the old browser address had additional website information on it. i used the login.php with no other text after and it worked – big relief!
