I’m not sure I understand exactly what you want here…
You say you’re allowing anonymous listings, which by definition means no user is associated to those listings. But then you want a user to own it and edit it. That seems odd to me.
Why not just require registration up front so the user can actually edit their listing without all of the assignment in between?

I have an existing arts directory based on extended Buddypress profiles. I want to recreate the profiles as listings in BDP and then enable the previous users to login and edit their listing if they want to; assuming they have the same email address as the listing.
I think I’ve figured out how to do it however; I just change the individual listing’s author from admin to the corresponding user and that should allow them the option to login and edit their entry?
Yes, that’s correct. Edit the “Author” field on the listing and assign to the correct user. They can edit it after that.
