    Hello,

I recently installed Wordfence on a brand new WordPress site. Unfortunately, I accidentally logged out before I had the chance to configure the site’s SMTP/email settings.

Now, I am unable to log back in. Wordfence is requiring email verification to proceed, but since the email settings aren’t configured, the verification email never arrives.

For the future, would it be possible to add a failsafe where login verification is not required if the system detects that no SMTP/email service is currently active?

    Thank you so much, JJZ

    Hi JJZ,

Thanks for reaching out! When reCAPTCHA assigns a low score during login, Wordfence sends an email verification link as a fallback to confirm you’re human. Since your site’s email isn’t configured yet, that verification email isn’t arriving.

To regain access, you can temporarily deactivate Wordfence by doing the following:

    • Please use FTP/SFTP — or any file manager your web host provides via their administration panel.
    • Look inside the /wp-content/plugins/ directory and rename the wordfence directory to wordfence.bak.
    • Once you have logged in to your WordPress admin you can name the folder back to wordfence again.
    • Refresh your dashboard and you should be able to see Wordfence Active again. If not, go to the Plugins page and Activate it.

Once you’re back in, in Wordfence > Login Security > Settings > reCAPTCHA, enable Run reCAPTCHA in test mode.  When this option is enabled, the CAPTCHA will record scores in the chart above but it will not block bots or visitors. This is intended to be used for a short period to decide on whether you need to adjust the threshold or to check for conflicts with other plugins or themes. You can read more about test mode at https://www.wordfence.com/help/login-security/#recaptcha

    Thanks,
    Margaret
