Main Nav Refinement

I recently built a theme from underscores and when I navigate to another page, the entire page reloads, including the menu, and the nav seems to jump. I wish to achieve an ajax like characteristic without an ajax plugin, just using the core functionality.

Though I’ve been involved with WordPress for many years, I still consider myself a novice. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!
