I’ve recently installed activitypub plugin in my wordpress site. I’m currently testing how it works. My idea about federation is trying to make it as easy as possible for users and, regarding the follow/reply button form I think it could be easier. To follow or reply an user needs to enter the fediverse handler (@[email protected]) o user account url (https://server.com/@user) but i considerer it shuld also works with only the server url like mastodon.social or https://mastodon.social (even the https:// part shouldn’t be necessary) and then with the button redirect the user to that server. Currently, if you do that, an error message is displayed.

Hey @carloher 👋

we wanted to use a version that works with most federated services and not only mastodon and because the endpoint differs between services, we use an old standard that was introduced with OStatus, the predecessor of ActivityPub and this standard requires a WebFinger handle/url.

I see. That makes perfect sense. I assume it is the same for replies. Is there any way to detect the server’s endpoint and give a message to the user if the format is not compatible? For example, the user inputs “server.social”, then the plugin tries to redirect to that server, but if mastodon compatible doesn’t work tell the user that it is necessary to input full user handle or profile url.
