Hello, Chris,
Thank you so much for trying out our plugin and for taking the time to send us your suggestions!
Here’s what I think:
1) I believe it is more or less the same either way. Well, very minor differences actually. It would take a significant time of development to satisfy both ways. At this time I have to say that the performance gain of such a feature might not be much worth the effort of developing it.
However, I really do like the way the plugin springs up new ideas in people’s minds and I will keep this suggestion for future reference.
2) That is actually an interesting extra feature. But I am not quite sure it is the job of this plugin to do such a thing. I mean that, in the first place, the users should resize and compress their images before uploading them, so that the maximum image size is not too big by nature, or, at least, the administrators should provide some automatic way of resizing and compressing them in the server after they are uploaded.
Making a note of this one, of course!
Once again, many-many thanks for your kind words!
Cheers,
Takis
Thanks for your reply. It’s great to see that you are active with this plugin. And I can see your points. Especially with the first that it might only be a very small improvement.
The second however would be something that I think would be great for this plugin. I understand that people should optimize beforehand and maybe also have other plugins to optimize the size of the uploaded content. The main reason I think a plugin like this would be great is this:
what about future prove image uploads? I am thinking: internet speeds (and display quality) are increasing and right now I might want to send out a max of 1000px by 1000px for the most resolution. But maybe I’d like to change that to 1500 in the future? With this plugin I could do it just in time (and the cache is already there, so it should be rather “simple” to integrate)?
I’m looking forward to your opinion on this 🙂
Hi, Chris,
I am processing your idea at the moment… Can’t make any promises yet and I certainly have to evaluate what are the next important features which should be added to the plugin, but you do have a point here.
You are saying that one should have their images uploaded in a future-proof big-enough quality (say 4-5K pixels or even more) and adjust the max resolution as they see fit.
It does make sense, although it slightly contradicts the notion that the original uploaded images should be optimised as well on the server. (Thumbnails should not be a problem because they can be re-generated.)
Now, our next major concern is to efficiently integrate the plugin with CDNs, especially those who use different subdomains for images (which is supposed to be a widely accepted speed recommendation at the moment, although I believe the performance gain from image downsizing is much greater). After this, perhaps we could start discussing about putting ideas like yours in development, as well!
Cheers,
Takis
Sounds good and I am eager to see what you come up with.
Both (future prove images and good and easy CDN support) are not easy subjects to tackle.
Looking forward to see your solution,
Cheers.
Thank you for your feedback and… stay tuned!
Cheers,
Takis
