The floating widget works very good, but it is a GDPR nightmare! (As Google can track everything of every website visitor the whole time!)

Because at the moment it works with “Show & Connect”: It connects to Google Servers when it is shown on the website (automatic with every page load).
So Google can send cookies and track visitor IP across the actual website – and many others with Google Translate widget inside!

It would be much better for GDPR compliance if the widget could be used as “Click & Connect”:
1.) Page load only shows static image (without active connection to Google)
2.) Only on click the image is converted to the real Google widget (making an active connection to Google only when activated by user-click)

There are similar “activate only on click” WordPress-solutions for YouTube, Google Maps and Social Sharing Icons (like Facebook “Like”) to cope with EU-GDPR.

It would be great if your plugin could also provide such a GDPR safe mode!

    Greetings,

as you may or may not know, the core of the translator is loaded directly from Google’s servers, you can check the javascript connections using your browser’s developer tools.

And whenever a visitor selects a language, it connects to Google’s servers too. That’s the way Google created it and it’s not technically possible to change it, only Google can.

Perhaps you should include a link to Google’s GDPR notice in your site.

    https://cloud.google.com/security/gdpr/

Or you could disable the plugin and use another one that doesn’t connect your visitors directly with 3rd party servers.

    Regards
