Hi.. I am using yoast seo plugin and I have a question on media attachment url’s.. the way my photo gallery is built, I need attachment url’s, but at the same time I do not want those urls to show in google search. All I need is the post on which the images are added to show in google search. I also want images itself to show on google because i have some meta data on them.. all I need is just the media attachment urls to not show in google search,…

Given my requirement, I think I need to set “Redirect attachment URLs to the attachment itself?” as No and I need to set “Show Media in search results?” as No too

am I correct? if yes, then how can I clean up the old media url’s that are already indexed on google? Appreciate your help

    Hi @telugubulletin,

You are correct. Setting both those toggles to No means that your media attachment pages can be accessed, but they will not be indexed in the search results.

As they will have the noindex tag set, Google will eventually remove them from its index too.

Hi Marius.. Thanks for the reply.. to make the removal process faster for the old url’s (already indexed), do you think “search index purge” plugin will help? or is that plugin for a different purpose?

The search index purge plugin was made to specifically address a bug that affected a very small number of users which occurred shortly after release of version 7 of the plugin. The purpose of the search index purge plugin is to purge attachment URLs out of the search results as fast as possible. However, it may take up to six months for the attachment URLs to be gone from the search results. You should then remove the search index purge plugin, and keep the redirect setting of the attachment URLs set to “Yes.” We also have more information on exactly what the Search Index Purge plugin does to help this in the following article: https://yoast.com/media-attachment-urls/

    Thanks Devnihil,

so in my case, I don’t need to use this plugin..? I just have to wait for the old indexed media url’s to be cleared by google? I was just worried that the setting “Show Media in search results = No” will only effect the future url’s and I have to do something for the old indexed url’s

In you case, the purge plugin would not be necessary.
