I tried to import a pdf file to the media library but got an error message, the media library tries to show all items but does not. Now I cannot navigate around the site or log out, I get a page cannot be displayed message when I try. Help I need an idiot guide as to how to solve this problem.

Have you tried:
-deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).
-switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

If you can’t access you dashboard properly then try this.

Try reinstalling WordPress 4.0.
