That’s highly abnormal. What plugins are you running? (and please don’t sign your posts).
I had several menu items mysteriously disappear today myself. My fellow admin was deleting tags at the time but the menu items that disappeared were all categories.
Then start checking logs.
Yep, server logs – error logs, access logs.
It seems that a lot of people are having this problem (me included) after searching the forums here. Has anyone actually figured out the cause/fix for this yet?
@scottybowl: At least in this thread, no answers. Folks aren’t responding with the additional data requested in order for us to try and solve the mystery.
If you want to help, do the following:
1. Disable all of your plugins. Does the error still occur?
2. Check your server’s error logs. Anything related to PHP in there?
3. Switch to the default theme. Does the error still occur?
I was never able to track down any errors relating to the disappearance. It was a one time issue that never happened again so I just forgot about it. Sorry, I know that’s not particularly helpful.
I too am experiencing this. The most prominent plugin I’m using is Gantry, and I’m on multisite. I was wondering if WP had some kind of menu item limit, because as I build this relatively large menu, entire trees are disappearing off the end!
Strangely, I added three top-level categories back, and only ONE of the three showed back up, and it had one subcategory that I had previously assigned to it (of several) show up too. I had NOT recreated this subcategory. It’s like they’re still there, but not showing up.
It’s not multisite. No idea why this is still in the multisite section, either.
My bet is the theme.
I’m not sure either. However, my theme doesn’t implement the menu natively anyway, but provides a widget that I can place the menu in.
The more research I’m doing, the more I’ve seen suhosin variables and memory cited as the issue. It’s a known problem that the WP team has elevated to have solved by v3.3.

My menu items were also getting randomly deleted. I thought it was Catalyst theme but it happens to elegant theme also. I thought it was WP Robot and another auto blog plugin making cron jobs for posts. But when I manually create or even save a post it would happen. So….
I deactivated everything (i.e. themes, plugins) One by one I went through them. When I activated my “Duplicate Posts Eraser” by BlackMelvyn plugin the problem happened. Everything else was fine. Not sure why but I’m happy to atleast have some solution cus it hasn’t happened again.
