Menu links return 404

When I try to add a menu item through Appearance > Menus > Group Documents Categories, it creates a link to example.com/group-documents-category/[category]/ This, however, results in a 404. The only way I have been able to create links to groups is to manually enter the group and copy the link to a custom menu link: example.com/groups/[group name]/documents/?category=[category id number] Am I missing a setting somewhere to set the page slug to work with the menu options?
