menus and dates gone from display
-
I did something without wanting to, I don’t know what, and now a lot of what I depend on for navigation are gone. How do I get them back? Specifically, (1) I used to see a menu of things I might need to do in a sidebar at left. I found that convenient, although I am aware that there’s a menu icon at top left. (2) If I went to view all posts, I used to see in the listing a post’s original pub date. It’s gone. Again, I’d like it back. (3) If I go to a post, I don’t see the option to view it formatted. (4) To make matters worse, a full-screen display about the latest WordPress update keeps coming back. Yes, sorry, a lot to fix

Hello @jhaber31
While the menu on the left doesn’t appear in the homepage, I can see it on other pages like this one:
https://www.haberarts.com/style/museums.htm
The menu, however, doesn’t appear when checking the page using a Mobile device. Is this the issue you are having?
Checking the source of the site, I see you’re using the “Radical” theme. I couldn’t find this theme in the ww.wp.xz.cn repository, but there is a similar one named “Radical Lite”:
https://ww.wp.xz.cn/themes/radical-lite/Does it look like the theme your site uses? This theme, unfortunately, hasn’t been updated in 3 years; and the official site: https://wpflask.com/radical/ , doesn’t load anymore, so perhaps the theme has been abandoned. Outdated themes may break if their components break with other, updated plugins; or when the WordPress Core is updated or the PHP version of the site is upgraded too. My suggestion here is to make a backup of your site, and see if by reducing the PHP version or downgrading the WordPress Core, the site looks correctly. But even then, I highly suggestion to check if you can find an updated version of the theme, or replace the theme with one that is currently updated.
Kind regards,
Jair. Thanks, but I’m afraid my message wasn’t clear enough. I wasn’t concerned whether my Web site looks as intended. (The page of museumlistings isn’t in WordPress anyhow. Except for the home page blog, I use mostly static html.) I was talking about the interface for working in WordPress, so that I can add to or change my content. The only sidebar I mean, say, is the one that gives me choices such as viewing past posts.
Hi @jhaber31,
I was talking about the interface for working in WordPress, so that I can add to or change my content. The only sidebar I mean, say, is the one that gives me choices such as viewing past posts.
The interface will vary depending upon if the theme providers its own settings to change the theme options, or if using page builder plugins etc
Could you please explain what exactly you are looking to make it work from the existing interface? Possible to share a screenshot?
You can check this doc on how to share screenshot:
https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/forum-user-guide/block-editor/#adding-screenshotsBased on the theme it appears the sidebar settings should be visible under Appearance > Widgets, have you checked that?

Nithin
I’ll get back to you once I’ve worked a bit on screen captures. I’ll say, though, that I’m very, very skeptical that you’re on the right track. Again, I’m talking about what I as the site’s editor sees, not what my readers see. If WordPress insists on intruding an “about” page, my readers surely aren’t seeing it. I can go regularly to my site’s public face, and it is not experiencing issues. Indeed, as it happens my posts do show dates. It’s the listing of posts in WordPress’s show all posts list that has lost dates (and quick routes to trashing). .
In any case, my template hasn’t changed in the last week or even in the last many years. And even at its origin, it took as a model my styles for static html pages, which as I say dominate my site with no interference from WordPress.
Hi @jhaber31,
Maybe you could check the “Screen Options” under Posts > All Posts and see if there are any columns for date that is unchecked?

If the above isn’t the case, then a screenshot, as mentioned before, would be helpful to have a better idea.

Thanks, and let me try to work with screen shots. First, here’s what I see on coming into WordPress, and, second, here’s what I see, with a menu sidebar, if I click on the menu icon at upper left. (Note that this isn’t all I see, because the screen dimensions don’t permit a proper full screen capture, but it’ll do.) I liked it better when my default was more like the second, with a menu always handy, but I guess I’ll get used to it. Note, too, once again that by sidebar I’m talking about functionality within the administration of my site, not it’s public face. I’m sorry the other kind person kept returning to that.
Third, here’s the screen for all posts, at least the screen after I scroll down a very little. Note how bare the information is. I located, as your kind direction, Screen Options near upper right, but it has some check boxes for what to show, and they’re all checked, including date. That’s weird. I honestly don’t remember precisely what I saw before these issues a couple of weeks ago, but it definitely included the date. I’d have sworn it also included the tags I’d assigned each post, so I had something more helpful than my deliberately allusive post titles, such as the name of my subject, but if I can’t, I guess I can’t.
Oh drat, my attempt to insert the third image isn’t working. It’s not asking for a URL to link to it as with the others. Maybe if I start another reply. ink

I’ll try again to upload an image for All Posts.

Hello @jhaber31,
This may happen if the page is displaying scaled up. Could you check if decreasing page scale helps?
You can zoom out using a hot key combination, depending on your operating system:
Ctrl + Minus (Windows) Cmd + Minus (Mac)To reset the page scale try:
Ctrl + 0 (Windows) Cmd + 0 (Mac)I hope that helps.
Regards,
DmytroI have to thank you. Reducing the page from what was ugly as can be anyhow did the trick. I can get into unforeseen keystrokes and hand movements often with unintended consequences. (Just today I’d reverted to an active touch pad, which can all but prevent me from doing what I do most, typing, without setting it off for the worst with the heel of my hand. I had to disable it once again.)
