I don’t know how you’d got the “customized error messages in french”. To get the messages translated, see Customizing Validation Error Messages and Contact Form in Your Language.

I know how the customized error messages are working and it was working fine before the upgrade indead.
Trying to be more clear:
1) I go to admin page of my contact form, I check the error message for example: “Message obligatoire” for required field.
2) I test the form without entering the required Text. An the message displayed for the field is not “Message obligatoire” but “This is a required field”.
The system doesn’t use the customized field validation message.

I did a downgrade to the previous version of Contact Form (3.8) and I had the same problem. So it seems to be related to the upgrade I did to WordPress 4.1.
Try deactivating the Jquery Validation For Contact Form 7 which you’re using on the site.
Is it necessary?
I deactivated it and now it works fine. It was a plug-in, I installed just to try extra validation….I didn’t really need it.
