    Hi,

The Yoast SEO plugin has been installed on my website for quite some time. I’m reaching out based on a recommendation from my theme developer, who suggested contacting Yoast SEO to help with an issue. The Yoast team then directed me to post my request here.

    Here’s the issue:
When I share my website’s homepage link via Messenger, the preview image displays correctly for some contacts, but not for others. It works fine on WhatsApp, Instagram etc.

Could you help me fix this?

Thanks so much for your support!

    Best regards,
    Arnaud

  • Hello @arnaud6391 ,

Facebook/Messenger aggressively caches Open Graph data. When different people shared your link at different times, they got different cached versions.
    The debugger forces a refresh.

The debugger shows exactly what image Facebook has cached, compare it to what you expect to see.
Here is the some quick fixes you may try:

Clear Facebook’s cache using their debugger:
    Go to : https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/
    Enter your homepage URL
Click “Scrape Again” button (multiple times if needed)
This forces Facebook/Messenger to fetch fresh metadata
Verify Open Graph image is set correctly in Yoast Settings.

    Hello Sajal,

I forgot to mention that when I opened the ticket but I already tried the FB debugger through that link. I repeated this multiple times but it did not fix the issue.

When I follow the steps on FB debugger, I see this message:

Warnings That Should Be Fixed, Missing Properties The following required properties are missing: fb:app_id

I tried to add a snipet code in my site but it did not work, the message still appear. Not sure if all this is related.

    Thank you for your support.

    Hi Arnaud,

The missing fb:app_id warning does not interfere with the ability to share posts on Facebook or Messenger. It’s not required, doesn’t do anything and hasn’t for years. We have more information on this here: https://yoast.com/help/fb-app-id-warnings/. If you prefer to output the fb:app_id, you can add the filter we mentioned over here.

Regarding the original issue with sharing on Messenger, it’s not something we can fix. So far the Open Graph tags are shown in the page source, our plugin is working as expected. Why some contacts see a preview and others don’t is outside the scope of our support. The Messenger support team might be able to provide further assistance.
