Hi there! I am working on a client site. They have a live blog, and we’ve been building a new WordPress site for them on a private, development server. We’re planning to use the native WordPress Import/Export tool to bring all of the blog posts from the live site to the development site. What will happen with the Facebook comments? Is there a way to import/export comments? Thanks!

  • Facebook comments are connected by URL/permalink. So, if the new site has the same URL structure then these comments won’t be lost.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks Alex! What about if we’re changing the domain name? Is there any way to salvage the comments if we move to a different URL structure?

Yes there is – the plugin will have to be edited specifically so that the old comments show for old URLs and the new URL show for new content. Feel free to email me (email is on the my Twitter profile) if you want to chat more about it.

Thanks so much, Alex! I will get in touch if I need any more help.

We had SEO Facebook Comments plugin installed and want to use your plugin instead. It uses a table like wp_comments_fbseo. How can I switch to your plugin without losing comments? Will the comments still be available because they’re connected via permalink?
