I am running OSX El-Kapitan and Firefox browser.

    I have a site at http://linesandlight.net/

I logged in recently to update to WP 4.6

I also wanted to update the Jetpack plugin from 4.1.1 to 4.2.1

When I logged in and went to do the updates I received a line of dialogue:
Warning: call_user_func_array() expects parameter 1 to be a vallid callback function “wp_resource_hints” not found or invalid function name.

When I asked for further details I got:

    /home/hawcroft/public-html/linesandlight.net/wp-includes/plugin.php on line 525

Neither the Jetpack plugin or the WordPress app will update. I just get a spinning beachball and eventually I got a report from Wordfence:

Wordfence found the following new issues on “Lines & Light”.
Alert generated at Friday 19th of August 2016 at 10:31:25 AM
    Critical Problems:
    * WordPress core file modified: readme.html

Unfortunately, the only backup of the site I have is from when I first set it up – I normally have auto backup turned on but somehow hadn’t done so with this site so although I can restore, it loses virtually all content since April.

I’m not IT smart [clearly] so if anyone can suggest a solution I can implement without having to start again, it would be great.

If I’m being an idiot and posting in the wrong place or asking a stupid question – please accept my apologies. I do try to fix things myself before yelling for help but most of it is beyond my knowledge or competence.

Have you considered updating WP and plugins manually?

    WordPress:
Download a fresh copy of the WordPress .zip file to your computer, unzip it, and use that to copy up all files and folders EXCEPT the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory. You may need to delete the old wp-admin and wp-includes folders and files on your server before uploading the new ones. Please read the Manual Update directions first.

Backup: If you haven’t already done, always backup everything (including your database) before doing any actions, just in case something really goes wrong. You can never have enough backups!

    Plugins:

    Tara,
Thank you so much for your help. I had a little difficulty but your advice got me through and I now have my site both updated and back up and running smoothly. I have also made sure that I have a BACKUP – of everything.

I am really very grateful for your assistance – it’s a site I built for my wife so you’ve kept me out of the doghouse and I’ve also learned some things I hadn’t realised before.

Your response was very kind – thank you for taking the time and trouble to help. If there is anything that acknowledges your contribution of the member of the forum, I’m happy to give it – for now, YOU ROCK!
