Hi Emma, Penscratch doesn’t need a separate mobile theme, because it’s already responsive, so it adapts automatically to screens of different sizes.
Let me know specifically what’s not working for you on mobile and I’ll be glad to have a look.
I’d suggest you add a space between the two words in your site title so they break properly.
p.s. those instructions you found apply only to WordPress.com sites, but your site is self-hosted, running the software on your own hosting. It’s possible to get the same option via Jetpack’s mobile theme, but it shouldn’t be necessary, as I mentioned above.
Hi Kathryn
Thank you for the reply!
I thought the Penscratch theme was responsive but for some reason on a mobile the menu isn’t accessible, it only loads the static home page. This doesn’t only happen on my phone but clients too.
Also, there is a space between ‘Contemporary Healthcare’ but for some reason it appears as one word which is annoying.
I do have Jetpack installed if that is helpful.
Kind wishes
Emma
Hi Kathryn
I have manage to separate ‘Contemporary Healthcare’ now, for some reason, it didn’t like the double spacing ‘C o n t e m p o r a r y H e a l t h c a r e’ used, which I really like.
Kind wishes
Emma
Hi Kathryn
I have enabled ‘mobile’ in Jetpack and it seems to have resolved the problem for mobile use however when you ‘view full site’ from a mobile the ‘menu’ still isn’t accessible. Is this normal?
Thank you for your help!
Kind wishes
Emma
It sounds like something else on your site may be interfering with the mobile menu.
To rule out a plugin conflict, you could try temporarily deactivating all your plugins. Does the problem persist? If the problem is gone, reactivate your plugins one-by-one, look at the site in between each reactivation, to find the conflict.
Let me know how it goes.
Hi Kathryn
Thank you for the reply.
I will look at it again over the weekend.

Hi Kathryn
I’m a little concerned that if I deactivate plugins I will loose all the info amended when I set up after self hosting. I have the following plugins active: Akismet, Jetpack by WordPress.com, Loginizer and WordPress Importer. No others.
Thank you
Kind wishes
Emma
Deactivating plugins (not uninstalling) temporarily and then reactivating normally doesn’t lose settings.
Looking at what plugins you’re running, I’d suggest just temporarily deactivating Loginizer to start and see how that goes first.
Hi Kathryn
I deactivated the mobile option on Jetpack to return to t’s original settings and then deactivated Lognizer to see if it would enable the Penscratch theme to work on mobile. No luck as yet. Any other suggestions?
Thank you
Kind wishes
Emma
You could try reinstalling a fresh copy of Penscratch.
Did you make any edits at all to the original theme files? If so, make a backup of your modified theme folder before reinstalling.
If that solves the issue, then move any changes you made in small batches into a CSS plugin or child theme, testing the site in between each to find the culprit.
Hi Kathryn
Thank you for the reply.
I haven’t made any edits to the original theme files so it should be fairly straight forward. Do I just go to the Penscratch theme and click on install again?
Kind wishes
Emma
Hi Emma,
You’ll first need to delete the existing theme and then re-install.
To do this, navigate to Appearance > Themes. Temporarily activate one of the default themes (it’s not possible to delete an active theme) and then click on Penscratch. You’ll find the option to Delete in the lower right hand corner.
Once that’s down, search for and re-install the theme.
Let us know how you get on!
Hi Siobhan
Apologise for the slow reply. I have been working on my website slowly but surely in my spare time. What I have come to realise now is that the website works fine on a laptop, on an iPad and on a mobile phone using the old format of reading wordpress themes (although I can’t remember how I managed to set it to do that …. I must have changed something in the Jetpack settings?). Anyway, at the bottom of my iPhone it says ‘View Full Site’. This takes me to what my actual website should look like. I have now discovered that the links within this site option work and that it is only the ‘menu’ at the top of the page which is dysfunctional. Any ideas how I can remedy this please? I have deleted the existing theme and reinstalled. No change.
Thank you!
Kind wishes
Emma
Hi Emma,
The theme’s JavaScript is not being loaded at all, which is why the menu toggle isn’t clickable on mobile.
I can only think that the cause is a plugin blocking the theme’s JavaScript. Can you please try deactivating all plugins on your site to see if that resolves the issue? I know that you tried deactivating one by one previously, but there may be a conflict between two particular plugins and I can also see a few extra that weren’t mentioned on your list.
If you’re not comfortable deactivating all of the plugins on your live site, you could set up a duplicate site and then attempt to replicate the issue with your plugins.
