switched to twenty themes, and the problem disappeared
This means your “Essentials” by Pixfort theme is the error.
Since you use a commercial theme or plugin and need support, please go to their official support channel. In order to be good stewards of the WordPress community, and encourage innovation and progress, we feel it’s important to direct people to those official locations.

Support of all commercial themes and plugins is out of scope for these forums. While we will not close your post, we also cannot guarantee any support at all, be that by volunteers or the developers. We recommend you instead use the developer’s official contact for their premium offerings, as that is the most direct line. As the developer is aware, commercial products are not supported in these forums.

It sounds like the issue is specific to the updated version of the “Essentials” theme by Pixfort. Since reverting to an older version resolved the problem, it’s likely a compatibility issue with the latest update. You may want to reach out to the theme developer for assistance or wait for a future update that addresses this issue. In the meantime, sticking with the older version could be a temporary solution.
