Mobile Usability Issues identified by Google

    I’m a fan of WPTouch and have so far never had an issue. However, this morning I received a message from Google informing me of the following mobile usability issues:

    Text too small to read
    Clickable elements too close together
    Viewport not set

    I’ve checked my settings for both WPTouch plugin as well as for my cache plugin and cannot find anything amiss.

    The only reason I can think of is my updating my website to WordPress 5.2 on Friday and this error turning up on Saturday.

    In other words, it appears the plugin has stopped working for my website and perhaps the plugin has to be tested for 5.2.

    Update: I went back and further configured my cache plugin using the guidance in https://support.wptouch.com/article/1446-configuring-cache-plugins-for-wptouch and the website is again showing mobile user friendly pages for those that I tested.

    I’m still interested in knowing about the WordPress 5.2 issue though since I wasn’t using the detailed configuration for mobile devices before.

    Hi @vshukla,

    Sorry to hear about the trouble you were having. It’s not the experience we want any WPtouch user to have.

    WPtouch is compatible with the latest version of WordPress. It could be a coincidence that you noticed the issue after updating, but updating it shouldn’t have caused that issue.

    Now that the caching plugin has been configured to play nicely with WPtouch, I wouldn’t expect the issue to persist. If it does, let us know and we’ll be happy to further investigate. Thank you.

    I have a similar problem as vshukla with regards to Mobile Usability issues:

    Text too small to read
    Clickable elements too close together
    Content wider than screen

    I’ve been running WPTouch with Quick Cache Pro with “User-Agent Exclusion Patterns” set to the list in the previous link for several years.

    It only affects about 4% of pages (300 pages with issues, 8000 pages OK).
    I’ve tried to clear the cache, and try again to check for validity but it fails.

    I’ve checked one example of problematic page: https://www.cnx-software.com/2011/11/25/400-free-raspberry-pi-development-boards-for-qt-5-developers/ to look for span or font tags that may affect this. But no such tags are present inside the body. So I’d assume the website renders the desktop version to Google bot from time to time…

    Yes, this is what I suspect may be happening here. WPtouch themes are optimized for mobile and they shouldn’t be triggering those warnings in Google’s Mobile Friendly test tool. I would recommend checking with your web hosting provider if there is any other type of caching (server-side) active on the site. If there is, it should also be configured to ignore the user agent list.
