Even better: find another theme that has the layout you are after and customize that one. There are so many themes available, something must come close to what you’re after. The theme list in the codex would be a good starting place.

Thanks — I just took a quick glance, and I assume I want a variable width layout, with my concerns about horizontal scrollbars and not overlapping the left-hand border image. Too bad most of the themes in the list don’t specify whether they’re fixed or variable width.
I have a few variable width WP themes available. Kickass-Squawk is three column,Kickass-boxes is two column with nav left, and Kickass-Dune is two columns with nav right.
I hope that helps!

Thanks! I like that layout (Dune), except the color under the sidebar is one piece with the white under the content, so when the window gets narrow, the dark background is under the dark content text while the sidebar information gets pushed below.
Right now I am trying out UrbanGiraffe’s guide to customizing the default… I’ve got things almost like I want them so I will continue with that until or unless I can’t get it to work.
One current problem with what I’ve got so far — why is the sidebar box higher than the content in Firefox, but they’re even with one another in IE?

You know, I like Squawk, too — I wonder if I could rearrange that one so that the header, content, and footer are to the right of the left sidebar, and make that left sidebar contain my background border image? I would want my background to show in the header and footer, too, and have the content and right bar separated with the background showing between. What do you think? Is it possible or a bad idea?
Hmmm… nevermind. Mine is a commercial site.
