modifying gallery_shortcode in media.php

    As the title suggest I want to modify my gallery_shortcode in media.php.

    The media.php is in wp-admin so I should not modify this correct? instead I should somehow make a copy in my theme?

    Can someone explain this, can I just copy the whole gallery_shortcode function into my themes function.php and modify as I wish?
