You can enter your own value in the “rel:” field at the top of the “Link Relationship (XFN)” section when adding or editing a link.

On 3.0 (B2), it’s a read-only field.
However, I see there’s an RC out…

Nope. It’s still a read-only field.
I’m sure there’s an explanation for that…
It might be a bug. Follow this guide to report it:

Just FYI: I got the typical OSS response: “It’s not a bug -CLOSED”. At least the WP crowd is fairly polite. The Google and Joomla crowds can get downright nasty. I haven’t used Drupal enough to find issues there.
I don’t know why I ever bother reporting bugs in major OSS systems. At best, I get a polite “brush-off,” and at worst, I get attacked for daring to say bad things about Mommy. In smaller OSS systems, I am usually taken seriously, and the bugs get addressed. I’m a professional C++ software engineer, and am pretty familiar with the process for testing and reporting bugs.
I’m doing a kludgey workaround, and I’ll wait until someone “important” wants this changed, and they change it.
It’s not a bug, it’s a ‘You’re using it wrong.’ Or more ‘You’re using it in an unintended way’ (wrong is SO subjective!)
The field is grayed out because it gets filled in based on the check boxes and radio buttons below.
Seeing as XFN is Xhtml Friends Network, this is expected behavior and would be plugin territory if you wanted to supersede it.

Yeah, however, XFN doesn’t own rel. Since WP, in their wisdom, have decided that the only access to link rel is via XFN, then I have no choice.
If this were my system, I’d add a radiobutton, with “Manual” or “XFN” as choices. “Manual” allows direct editing of the field, and XFN does all the silly social networking stuff.
Ah, well…there are worse problems, and WP still rocks.
Why not put it in as a non-bug feature request? I mean, as a bug, it’s not, but as a request the worst they could say is ‘out of scope’
