• Derek – thanks a lot for the help with the formatting stuff earlier…

…but I just discovered another oddity that I can’t figure out. On my News page, set to be where posts go via the Customizer, the […] ‘more’ link isn’t active – can’t click on it to continue reading the post. Have to click the title of the post, which may not be intuitive for some people.

I also just tried using a 3rd-party utility to automatically insert a ‘More’ tag after so many characters/words – and the tag it made was also inactive.

    ? What am I missing?

The more tag won’t do anything on the blog index because the blog index is already set up to only show excerpts. Like this: http://demo1.chirothemes.com/blog/

So the more tag isn’t necessary. You can just publish your post without a more tag, and WordPress will automatically cut it off at 55 words for the excerpt on the blog index.

However, if you want to specify the exact excerpt, you can. You do this from the post editor. Go to the top and click the tab for “Screen Options” and you’ll see a check box called Excerpt. If you check that box, you’ll then see a new text area for the Excerpt underneath the post editor. Whatever you put in that box will replace the WordPress generated excerpt.

Also, you should consider using featured images in the post editor. As you can see from the demo, it adds really nice thumbnails to excerpts on the blog index page.
