• Hi there. My wife has spent at least 10 years working on this genealogy site. We are in our 70’s and want to ensure that our descendents will always have access to her work, even though there’s little interest at the moment. After we pass, none of our kids will renew any hosting, so the thousands of hours she has put into it will be for nothing.

Tell me if I’m wrong, but I believe that a site “hosted” on WordPress will exist for all time.

If we go in this direction, how do I go about it? Can she still create and edit content?

Or have I got this all wrong? Many thanks for any help

  • Domains and hosting generally require renewals so it is important to cover the cost for the years or months you intend to keep running the website.

To avoid any confusion, WordPress.com and ww.wp.xz.cn are two separate entities: https://ww.wp.xz.cn/documentation/article/difference-between-wordpress-org-and-wordpress-com/

While WordPress.com provides a managed service and experience, ww.wp.xz.cn is self-hosted; i.e. you have to handle all the technical parts of the website from domain and hosting setup to content and outlook.

For guided support and assistance with your site, you can find support contacts for WordPress.com at https://wordpress.com/support/.

Thank you for your response. I would like to re-state my aim.

I need to move my wife’s site, [ redundant link deleted ] to somewhere where there are no fees or renewals, where she can continue to maintain her site, and where its existance doesn’t depend on our kids remembering to renew donain names. hosting etc. Is WordPress.com the answer?

    Does that make sense? Thanks

WordPress is just the software you use to enter content into your website. It also controls the look etc. for you. This free-to-use software is available here on ww.wp.xz.cn, where you also asked your question.

However, what you are referring to is the hosting of the website. As far as I can see, you are using the host Hostgator. So the existence of your website is primarily dependent on your contract with Hostgator. If you want to ensure a successor arrangement here so that the website continues to exist for a long time, then it is best to contact their support.

If you still want to move your website, there are many hosters available to you. You can find some recommendations here: https://ww.wp.xz.cn/hosting/

How to move a ww.wp.xz.cn-based website is described here: https://developer.ww.wp.xz.cn/advanced-administration/upgrade/migrating/

If you want to move to the above-mentioned commercial platform wordpress.COM, contact their support for clarification.

This is a very reasonable and important request that most commercial providers are not addressing.

To preserve any site, including yours, you can archive it with The Internet Archive’s Way Back Machine: https://web.archive.org/

On that page there’s the section “Save Page Now”. Enter your website’s URL and it will take some minutes before the site is archived.

“The Internet Archive, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form. Like a paper library, we provide free access to researchers, historians, scholars, people with print disabilities, and the general public. Our mission is to provide Universal Access to All Knowledge.”

I should add that you can not manage a website saved on the Wayback Machine as you’ll normally manage your WordPress website. What I recommend you to do is to keep working with the commercial hosting provider that lets you pay in advance the most amount of years, and keep adding content to your site and every time you add new content be sure to save a new snapshot of it on the Wayback Machine. This way you’ll ensure that your updates will be preserved.

Another important thing to mention is that eventually the domain (your website address) would not be renewed and it will direct, either to a generic website or if someone pays for it, to that person’s website. However, visitors to the Wayback Machine can go back in the calendar view on the date that the domain pointed to your current site and this way they would be able to view it.
