I can now access the back end of the website but I am worried that if all must used plugins are disabled – this would effect the functionality of the site?

It depends on what functionality they are providing.

Nonetheless, you should be able figure out which of the mu-plugin is the issue. Reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

    Thanks for your response t-p!

Please bare with me, but just to make things clear does the mu-plugin file resemble all the installed plugins that are visible in the wordpress dashboard Plugins Tab? So this wouldn’t resemble any “hidden” plugins that i cannot see in within wordpress?

Right now, I was able to enable all plugins without having issues in the backend which is a relief. But now i am a little confused as to how the mu-plugins_old file works with the website now?

I don’t usually touch any of the files/folders created by WordPress to avoid dysfunctionality. So in this case, i am just wanting to ensure leaving this file renamed won’t cause any errors for the website 🙂

    thanks!
