Multi blog installation

I was under the impression that I could install the latest WordPress as a multi- blog using the network feature and have additional blogs in sub-directories.

I have done a fresh install but am told when I go to the network setup that I can only use subdomains because it is not a fresh install.

Clearly, I am missing something obvious here.

Any help most appreciated.
