• Hello everyone!

I have a challenge. I’m trying to find the easiest way and if it is possible to do a multi-language website with a Welcome page that has the three different languages buttons so people can choose the language that fits to them before they are taken to the actual website. My customer will provide me with all the text and photos already translated, meaning there’s no need for an automatic translator. My customer wants to be able to make his own updates. So my questions is if this is even possible or do I have to go the custom route thru Adobe Muse or Dreamweaver? Or any other ideas?

    Thanks

Well, there are a lot of options for this. One might be to create four separate WP sites:
    – on the main domain (domain.com), simply have the home page with the options for going to the language sites.
    – then each of the three language sites on subdomains (en.domain.com, fr.domain.com, etc.)

    Hi Bet,

So that means I have to install WP in all four different domains?

In my suggestion, yes, it would be four separate installs. That would be one simpler way to keep the languages and the respective menus separate.

You could do this all in one site, but it would require templates in your theme that you could apply to the different languages so that you could get different menus for each language.

    Hi again Bet,

Can you expand on the last paragraph a bit more? Looks interesting.

    Thanks

You would have to do something like this:

Then, you would also have to keep track of the different language-pages somehow–perhaps by setting parent pages in the dashboard. If each language-set of pages isn’t very large, this might be practical in one site, but if you have more than a few pages, or your content will be changing frequently, or more than one person will be managing content, it might be easier to keep organized in different sites. Since it sounds like the client will be managing the content, you’ll have to make a judgement call about what will be less confusing for her/him.
