I am toying with the idea of setting up a multisite install, but not sure if it is what I really want, so a few questions:

    1. Can you use it to host domains? i.e. One install, but any domain can be viewed as if it was a single install?
    2. If you have individual domains set up, can each one have its own user accounts? Ideally, editor level accounts only (for customers).
    3. If say, I set one up with 3 themes, can the individual domains then pick any theme they like? I guess this is only possible if they are admin users?
    4. Can there be admin users for individual domains, or top domain only?

    Or,

    5. Have I totally misunderstood how it works!

    Thanks!

  • 1. Yes, but you will have configuration problems if you need to do https…unless you have complete control over the web server config.
    2. Yes, each site can have its own users or they can share subsets of users. This the kind of odd part about multisite, each user created is a “network” user and kind of has quasi access to other sites
    3. Yes. You can create multiple themes and allow each site to select their own theme. Of course the user needs the proper access (I think Administrator access in this case).
    4. There are super users who are admins for all sites. Each site can also have its own Administrator(s).
    5. There’s a lot more to multisite. Try it out =)

I found using a discrete database for each site to be a better use of software

multisite seems to stem from a lack of server resources from greedy ISPs

wordpress.com today gives each website something like 3GB free so databases are not as scarce as some would like to make users feel
