have you tried:
-deactivating the WP e-Commerce Plug-in
that did it. now i feel stupid.
now a new question:
how do i implement an e-commerce store without this happening?

I dunno.
One thing is clear – this plugin breaks your theme.
It’s probably related to a javascript conflict of some sort
I had a sliding door jquery menu that wouldn’t work with e-commerce either
I switched to the eshop plugin since my storefront portion was in its infancy it wasn’t too hard
thanks for the recommendation. i just installed eshop and everything is working fine.
Good luck with it! I found it way easier to use…. plus the dev is very responsive and helpful
