Multiple currency – high level behaviour

I’ve been trying out the free plugin already (and like what I’ve had working already) and I was hoping to clarify how the multiple currencies behaves in a transaction.

Right now, all my products are priced in CA$ in my store and I sell to US, CA and EU. I use Paypal as my payment gateway and I receive payment in CA$, whatever the customer’s own currency is (and Paypal has obviously taken care of conversion in the transaction).

The prices in my store are just shown as $100, not CA$100, as I saw a drop in sales from the US when I temporarily displayed CA in front of $. Hence the need for a full currency switcher, a better and more informative way to handle local currency display.

If I add a second currency, US$, I can allow the customer to switch the displayed currency on category and product pages – I’ve tried that and it works really nicely. My default and welcome currency remains CA$.

I’d like to display the customer-selected currency throughout the whole purchase transaction. So if I have the cart and checkout pages showing the selected currency, what will the Paypal dialogue show – CA$ as default currency or US$ as customer-selected?

If they selected US$, do I still receive CA$ in my Paypal account (with Paypal handling the conversion) or will it trigger multiple currencies in my Paypal account (which is supported apparently and then I’d have to move from one to the other if I wish).

If a customer transacts in US$ by choice, will the order in the WP backend show as CA$ or US$?

I’m hoping that the customer _sees_ the currency they choose throughout, but I receive my default currency and the admin side continues with default currency.

Hoping to understand how it’ll work beforehand. Sorry, I did search and there are plenty of specific technical questions but nothing seemed to help me understand at a higher level how the process works with multiple currencies, and not sure how I could test the different scenarios seeing as I’m Cdn in CA with a CA$ Paypal so not sure how I test for customer’s currency & location not same as store’s default.
