Multiple portfolios

In my site I have two pages, lets call them soccer / hockey, both pull off the entries from the Portfolio section, the problem is they are pulling all the entries. Where only 1/2 are for hockey and the other half for soccer.

What I am trying to do is create two portfolio sections so that the user can populate each section separately and have them flow into the correct page.

I have been googling around and found a few themes that say they have multi portfolio support but I already have a theme in place & don’t want to start over. I’ve also read some posts that duplicating the tpl_portfolio.php page is the way to go but that info was based on a site before WP 3.0.

Anyone have a few pointers or places I should look? New to WP but I have been a programmer for years.
