Hi @usascottwright
This might be due to plugins like Jetpack, Smush, ShortPixel, or EWWW Image Optimizer. These plugins automatically create an optimized version of your uploaded images to improve site speed and performance. That’s why you’re seeing the same image twice—one is the original (or a resized version), and the other is the optimized copy.
Why You See Two Images
- The one labeled “optimized” is a compressed version of the original image, usually created automatically by an optimization plugin to speed up page loading.
- The other is likely the original image, or a resized version used for a specific layout (like thumbnails, medium, large, etc.).

Hey @usascottwright ,
The image duplication issue you are dealing with is likely caused by an optimization plugin or theme function.
From your screenshot and explanation, what’s happening is:
- You upload one image, but two versions appear in the Media Library.
- One is labeled “optimized”, which suggests that a plugin (or possibly the theme itself) is creating an optimized copy for performance (smaller file size, faster loading).
Yes, if it’s saving both the original and the optimized version, it’s using extra disk space.
Why it’s happening:
A plugin (like Smush, ShortPixel, EWWW Image Optimizer, Jetpack, etc.) is set to:
- Automatically optimize images upon upload
- And store an optimized copy, instead of replacing the original
What you can do:
Check your plugins:
- Go to your Plugins > Installed Plugins list
- Look for any of these (or similar):
- Smush
- ShortPixel
- EWWW Image Optimizer
- Optimole
- Jetpack
- Deactivate one at a time and try uploading an image to see which one is duplicating.
Plugin settings:
- Most of these have a setting like- “Keep original image?” or “Replace original image with optimized version?”
- Set it to replace, not duplicate, if you don’t want both versions.
