I use DPS along with Content Aware Sidebars to show related posts below the post content related to the categories the post is in.

If the post is in multiple categories, Content Aware Sidebars puts in a DPS shortcode pulling related posts for each category. and stacks them with applicable heading above each.

This was setup and worked just fine for a few months.

Recently, I updated from WP 4.9.10 to 5.2.2 and then noticed now that each shortcode shows exactly the same articles and featured images. And.. they’re not recent at all.

Very odd. Dont even know where to start troubleshooting what has happened

I’m sorry to hear about your issue. I’m not aware of any changes in WP 5.0, 5.1, or 5.2 that would affect Display Posts.

It sounds like some custom code (either a plugin or something in your theme) is modifying the queries so they don’t perform as expected. Here’s a guide to troubleshooting the issue: https://displayposts.com/2019/04/20/using-health-check-plugin-to-find-theme-and-plugin-conflicts/

Alternatively, you could use the same shortcode to use the current post’s category in the related posts query: https://displayposts.com/2019/01/04/list-posts-in-the-current-category/
