Multiple Similar Plugins

    Ok I have to get this off my chest first… HOLY HELL! I cant even begin to say how many circles I was put into and how impossible it was just to get to a freaking forum. You guys definitely need to make that process a lot easier and more user friendly rather than putting people through a proverbial Hell. I just spent about 10 minutes of that frustration to ask a question that’ll take me 1 minute to ask. Absolutely ridiculous.

    Now that I got that out of the way, I have multiple plugins that are very similar in the type of plugin they are. For instance:

    Security: BPS Security and Wordfence
    Clearing Cache: WP Fastest Cache and Autoptimize
    Backups: Updraft Plus and Backup Guard

    My understanding is that using similar plugins can actually cause conflicts and even pose more harm than good. I personally haven’t experienced any issues from these plugins and the reason I have these is that in each “category” one plugin typically does something slightly different than it’s other similar plugin or does something that the other doesn’t even do. What are your thoughts on this? Do I leave it as is if I am not experiencing any issues?

    The strength of WP is the depth of the ecosystem. Thus, for any given task there are probably several plugins. There is probably no one solution that’s perfect for everyone.

    I would use only one plugin of each type so they don’t step on each other, as well as waste hosting resources.

    My personal preferences:

    backup: backwpup
    security: wordfence
    optimization: autoptimize
    caching: comet cache

    Thank you, I will definitely look into those new ones you mentioned. The one thing I noticed with Autoptimize and Fastest Cache, is that it greatly improved compared to using just one or the other by itself.

    Between my current backup apps, I think updraft would be best because I think it does cloud and local backups on the server. However, I will still look into the one you suggested and see how it compares. I don’t thin I have heard of comment cache so I will look into that one as well.

    If it ain’t broke then don’t fix it!

    I do run WordFence and iThemes Security together as they kind of compliment each other and don’t interfere with each other. So your BPS security is probably a good idea, too.

    I’m not sure about having the two backup plugins but if they don’t clobber each other’s files that’s probably fine. Might be a problem if they both started running at the same time or something.

    I use upDraft myself.

    I thought auto optimize was for databases while the cache stores pages.
