    I would recommend changing the password of the superadmin via phpmyadmin. So as described here: https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/article/resetting-your-password/#through-phpmyadmin – but make sure that you find the global wp_users table here and change the password there.

    The password is the same for main and sub domains. The problem is solvable if I disable multisite mode – I can then log into main domain and admin. If I enable multi I can log into the subdomains but not main/admin. The password is the same.

    I can make the site work by using Categories instead of subdomains, but I lose the custom look of each sub. WP-CONFIG.PHP is properly defined as is .HTACCESS.

    It’s just weird.

    I suspect your user is not configured as a super admin. You have to define it separately. I found instructions on how to do this here: https://drawne.com/add-super-admin-wordpress-network/ (from heading “Using phpMyAdmin to add a Super Admin”).
