• Hi there all,

I appreciate any help in advance. I don’t want to get into too much detail as it may just confuse the issue but in short I have tried to use both the MU Domain Mapping plugin and the one called Pronamic. I am not really a web guy more a video buy but thought i would be able to simply and easily send my site to the right domain after it was built. Seems I am silly.

I have tried with both apps but firstly I cannot ever see the super admin fields, so the stesp shown in tuts tend not to work after the sintall phase. I did get the MU mapper plugin to show me the “Add domain” page but it looked diffferent to any screen shots and I could enter into the fields but not actually save the new domain info. Since then I deleted it all and went back to how it was.

So can I get some help here with working out if I am getting the install right? And what I need to do on the name registrar/DNS side and then on my server side. My domains reg is with godaddy and I have lunarpages for my server. I will happily give more specific info if any one has time to help.

    Nick

ps. with the MU domain mapper I kept getting the message that i needed the WP install in the root, so I did a test install of WP and did a site export and install to the new root level wich us what let me see the extra domain setting pages I wrote about above but it would only see the test root build I did and I couldn’t do anything to convince it to see the site build in the sub folder while referring to the WP install on the root – it kept only seeing the root temp site. I have since cleared al the testing etc.

  • Recent WordPress updates (IIRC, since approx. version 4.5) have rendered domain mapping plugins obsolete.

    You can either:

    1) Leave the domain to be mapped onto your WordPress subsite at the domain’s registrar and set the domain’s IP address to your Multisite installation; or,

    2) Host the mappped domain where the Multisite is hosted as either an Alias (parked domain) or an Addon domain. If you choose this method and are operating under cPanel, the control panel will create and/or modify DNS zone files for your Addon/Alias and your mapped domain name will point to your Multisite.

Next, login to your Multisite Dashboard and go to:

My_Sites -> Network_Admin -> Sites OR just Sites from the Dashboard. They both take you to http://your-multisite-domain-name.com/wp-admin/network/sites.php

Click the edit link under the subsite you want the registered domain name mapped to, and edit the Site Address (URL) under the Info tab, substituting your registered domain name for the subsite name.

    That should do it.

    Hi there Don,

Is there something wrong with my multisite install if it looks like this on the page you are sending me to?

    Nick

    PS.

I cannot seem to change anything on these pages. Am I in the wrong place or is there a problem. I actually started off with non multisite install of WP but then upgraded as the blogs seemed to say I needed multisite to domain map.

I really appreciate your help on this. Wonderful stuff.

    Nick,
Have you tried adding a subsite yet?
With respect to your screen capture, when you visit the interface associated to an actual subsite, the Site Address (URL) field is editable. In your screen capture, you are looking at the Info palette associated to the main site on the domain, factandfiction.tv.
Unfortunately, it appears you installed your WordPress Multisite in a directory below your root. IIRC, your Multisite should be installed in public_html (Linux/Unix) in order to function properly. When you decompress your latest.tar.gz, don’t simply rename the wordpress directory to something else (it appears you renamed it to nickfernandez), move all the files contained in said wordpress directory up one level to public_html before running the installation process. That’ll place your main site at http://factandfiction.tv instead of http://factandfiction.tv/nickfernandez. Assuming your Multisite is configured for subdirectories and you leave it as is, your first subsite will end up being located at http://factandfiction.tv/nickfernandez/your-first-subsite.
It’s up to you, but that’s a lot of typing.

    Hi there,

I am a bit confused by the term “main site”. I am using my server factandfiction.tv to host the site that will ultimately use the domain nickfernandez.com.au (for now I am testing with another domain I own called htt://saigonberlin.com to see if I can get it working).

So far I think my main problem is that to get my the domain of choice I need to:

    1. be able to domain map
    2. I can only domain map with the multisite install
    3. To do all this I need to WP multisite at the root level.
    4. Once WP is installed at root I should be able to use my admin to map as you first instructed.

Does this sound correct? I might add that nowhere, either in the multisite admin or the specific site admin can I modify any field concerning URLs/domains. Will this change once I move the WPP install to root? Can I keep my current individual site build (that I want to ultimately use the domain nickfernandez.com.au) positioned in the sub folder “http://factandfiction.tv/nickfernandez/” or will it need to go to root as well. I am a bit worried about moving it as when I tested this at one point I couldn’t keep all the work formatting and building etc I had done on the site. WHat is the best (most comprehensive and safe) way to move the current build if i need to do so?

Srry this is so simple. Howver, i am sure you can see my need for help. Once again. many many many thanks.

    OK … an update.

I installed WP to root and now I think I can see what you mean … I think.

When I created the new install I used Softaculous app provided by Lunarpages on their cPanel.

So when I went to the Sites listing in the network admin I saw this:

    main site only

Then I could “add new” which then allows me to edit those fields about the URLS/domain as you wrote about. I think before the install for WP in the wrong place meant nothing worked as I read it would.

So now I added as an example where I have left the original site build which is http://factandficion.tv/nickfernandez which looks like this in the admin:

    with subsite?

So to answer my own question (I hope), “main site” above is just where the WP is installed and so where the admin lives etc. Is that right? If so then I need to work out how to link the site with the root based WP install and how to get rid of the one I made in the subfolder “http://factandfiction.tv/nickfernandez/”. How do I change that association?

I am a bit confused about where you wrote above “your first subsite will end up being located at http://factandfiction.tv/nickfernandez/your-first-subsite.” All i wanted to do was use my server at factandfiction.tv to host the site and then to map it to the domain nickfernandez.com.au , so this was the sole purpose of mapping, so not sure about why it would still be lots of writing? Confused. Also, dont really get why in this case it would be http://factandfiction.tv/nickfernandez/your-first-subsite. Why not just nickfernandez folder/level as the site name?

    Nick,
You’re doing fine… http://factandficion.tv/nickfernandez is your subsite to which you can map a registered domain name, given the registered domain name is set to the same IP address as your Multisite installation at http://factandfiction.tv (AKA main site). If you want to map nickfernandez.com.au to the subsite http://factandficion.tv/nickfernandez, you’ll need to register nickfernandez.com.au with a Domain Registrar. I checked nickfernandez.com.au for an A record and couldn’t find one; and, don’t see a com.au TLD in my eNom list. It is in my OpenSRS list of TLDs, but it’s not cheap. Perhaps an AU Registrar can better assist you.

There is an A record for nickfernandez.com that points to an IP address. If nickfernandez.com belongs to you, make sure its IP address agrees with the IP address of your Multisite installation and subsitute http://nickfernandez.com for http://factandfiction.tv/nickfernandez in the Site Address (URL) under the Info tab for http://factandfiction.tv/nickfernandez.

Just a quick word about your statement above:

“I am a bit confused about where you wrote above “your first subsite will end up being located at http://factandfiction.tv/nickfernandez/your-first-subsite.”

You are taking my quote out of context. I said earlier:

Assuming your Multisite is configured for subdirectories and you leave it as is, your first subsite will end up being located at http://factandfiction.tv/nickfernandez/your-first-subsite.

    Make sense?

    Hey Don,

Thanks again … It seems one of my hurdles was that the cache wasnt clearing … My test domain “saigonberiln.com” now directs to “factandfiction.tv/nickfernandez”.

Whoo hoo! All good. Very exciting.

Yes, sorry about the nickfernandez.com.au confusion … I didnt explain that its not been bought yet. I was using the saigonberlin.com address (which I have owned for sometime and not yet used) as a test while I organsie purchase of nickfernandez.com.au., which is a little more pricey than a straight up .com but as you found, someone else owns nickfernandez.com and I am in Australia where the use of .com.au is pretty standard as you would guess.

So now, my next task is to work out how I make all links look like my domain of choice. I haven’t yet looked into this but if you have any 101 tips, I would be more than happy. What do we think of this kind of plugin to facilitate the update?

Once again, many thanks for your help and time. Great to have such great support here.

Makes one feel that the world is an ok place!
