• Hey all, I have version 4.6.1 installed of WordPress Multisite with a couple of subsites created. As I understand, domain mapping is now built in and we no longer need a plugin. I have followed as much as I can to try and implement everything properly, but have still run into an issue.

    The issue is this:
    1) My external domain (DOMAIN.com) does not map to NETWORK.com/SUBSITE as it should. It resolves to DOMAIN.com/cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi
    2) Also, going to NETWORK.COM/SUBSITE directly gives me a 404 from NETWORK.com as if my subdirectory/subsite is not there.

As a note: I am able to log into wp-admin for the subsite and everything seems to work in the backend.

Some backstory of what I have done:
I created an A record with the registrar DOMAIN.com pointing to NETWORK.com’s IP.
I changed the Site Address (URL) of the SUBSITE to DOMAIN.com.

Anyone able to help? What’s going on?

  • Can you change back the site url and make sure the vhosts config file points the domain to the same folder as your multisite and NOT a new / blank folder. If you’re using a tool like cPanel make sure you add DOMAIN.com as a add on domain and point the folder to the root of the multisite setup.
