• After banging my head against the wall until 5am last night. I kind of got multisite to work.

The subsite I set up is called http://www.FreeTravelGenius.com.

Key learnings by trail and error and deep searches of the forums:
    – After setting everything up with the plugin on the network admin page you must also go to the subsite and choose domain mapping there
    – On the network admin domain page, you MUST use all LOWERCASE or you will end up with a redirect loop

    Outstanding issue:
    – My subsite page load speed seems to have gotten significantly slower (though I will admit that some of it is due to a recent implementation of Google +1 script)
    – Multisite seems to be against be using “www” for the subsite, WTF, or am I missing something?
    – My main site is not well hidden. It isn’t that important here, but would look much less professional for a client. I know some people don’t recommend using it for clients, but I want the time savings. On the bottom of the screen, the browser’s status bar shows “waiting for [mainsite]” when loading. This didn’t happen when I just used hostgator’s add on domain settings with a single wordpress install. Is there another way I can make it more like it is an add on domain?

Case matters on Linux boxes. Always did. 😉

No, you’re not missing anything. 😉

use a domain mapping plgin that hides all references to the main site.

I’m using WordPress MU Domain Mapping v0.5.4.1. Is there a better one?

There are other paid ones available.

Can you recommend one? I’m not big enough to spend the money yet, but I am happy to know there is a solution available someday if I am going to invest time in switching to a network.

    Thanks.

You have to ‘map’ both www and non-www for the subsite, and set one as primary (though I would suggest non-www personally, as shorter is better).

With the plugin you’re using, if you check the redirect admin box

Redirect administration pages to blog’s original domain (remote login disabled if redirect disabled) – This makes all admin pages show up on the original domain instead of on the new domains. You need this enabled for remote login to work.

That should hide the real domain pretty much as well as you can. You can always dig down and sort the REAL site, but that one works fine.

The paid version of the plugin you’re using is called “Professional Domain Mapping”
