My session keeps expiring

When I open my staging site, it prompts me to log in. But then whenever I try to create a test post or update a plugin on my test site, I get a new login prompt or a message to the effect of “you can’t access this page.” If I am very fast, sometimes I can manage to update a plugin before my session expires. Why is this happening?
