    Hi,

    You should read the backup log file to see what the maximum database packet setting is; if it’s too low, you should ask your web hosting company to raise it. This condition is very rarely seen, but implies that you have a very large entry in your WP database which exceeds the maximum size that your database server is allowed to communicate.

    Hi David – Thanks for the reply. I just tried running a backup to get a current log file; the backup aborts. That is, it says “requesting backup” and then that message disappears after a couple of minutes. (Apparently it times out.) When I tried to view the latest log file via the plugin, it returned “Loading log file … Bad Request (error)”.

    This happens intermittently, and I can’t figure out why. I’ve upgraded PHP to 7.4, I have the latest version of UpdraftPlus, and I have reduced the split size to 25 mb.
    Any clues on this?

    Now, funny thing is, I just tried running the backup again — and it worked just fine! Except for the PHP errors, as follows:

    20210430T080938: http://www.mchesleyjohnson.com/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php
    mysqldump: Error 2020: Got packet bigger than ‘max_allowed_packet’ bytes when dumping table wp_pttl_options at row: 449

    20210430T095947: http://www.mchesleyjohnson.com/wp-admin/setup-config.php
    PHP Warning: implode(): Invalid arguments passed in /hermes/walnacweb07/walnacweb07ah/b1769/moo.mcjohnsonfineartcom/mchesleyjohnson/wp-content/mu-plugins/endurance-page-cache.php on line 287

    20210501T192738: http://www.mchesleyjohnson.com/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php
    mysqldump: Error 2020: Got packet bigger than ‘max_allowed_packet’ bytes when dumping table wp_pttl_options at row: 449`

    Does this mean the backup didn’t actually work, even though I received the message “the backup apparently succeeded?

    I looked at the UpdraftPlus log file, and I’m not exactly sure where to find maximum database packet. I did find this line:

    0000.013 (0) UpdraftPlus WordPress backup plugin (https://updraftplus.com): 1.16.55 WP: 5.7.1 PHP: 7.4.10 (cgi-fcgi, Linux walcustpro0402.int.bizland.net 5.4.25 #1 SMP Thu Mar 12 18:39:33 EDT 2020 x86_64) MySQL: 5.6.47-87.0-log WPLANG: en_US Server: Apache/2 safe_mode: 0 max_execution_time: 900 memory_limit: 256M (used: 69.9M | 71M) multisite: N openssl: OpenSSL 1.1.1g 21 Apr 2020 mcrypt: N LANG: ZipArchive::addFile: Y

    Thanks for your help, and I apologize for the bump — didn’t realize it was not allowed.

    You need to ask your web hosting company to raise your MySQL maximum packet size.

    Thank you, David. Am traveling for a few weeks but will check when I return.
