I’m starting a spa website and one of the spa owners says “i have the domain and it’s ranking high, give me your name server and I will transfer it.” The domain is currently showing as available for $18/yr, so I’m very confused.

In the past I’ve simply paid the $18 for the year here and started the site. What information do I give him? If I tell him “ns1.wordpress.com ns2.wordpress.com ns3.wordpress.com” is that all he needs? Thank you for any help.

Talk to your host about their name servers. Things generally work best if you put the DNS with the host. That lets them move your site to another server, if necessary, without intervention on your part. You can also use the DNS servers from your domain registrar, as long as you update it to show the right A record for the domain, a CNAME record for http://WWW.domain.com, and any MX entries if you’re using mail through your domain.

With regard to your specifics, is the spa owner transferring *ownership* of the domain to you or simply saying “you’re building my website so manage the DNS entries”?

Unless you’re hosting on wordpress.com, you would *not* use their DNS servers.

Thank you for your response. He wants to transfer ownership. Did I give him the correct info? He said “I have the domain name on my registar…do you need me to change the nameservers to yours?”

Contact your favorite registrar to find out how to transfer ownership of a domain. I’m closing this topic as it’s not really a WP question.
