s2Member Pro is at the 150102 level.

We have used the plugin for several years and are looking for a better way to register new members. Currently, we allow open registration for free members who can later upgrade to paid subscriptions. The registration process is the one which emails the new member a password.

We use this method for the usual reason. Allowing people to select their own uernames and passwords and then login in imediately is an open invitation for mischief. So, we prefer they respond to email to complete the process.

However, the mailed password is where it breaks down for an unacceptable number of new members. Even though our welcome notices advised IN ALL CAPS that people COPY and PASTE the initial (long cryptic) password and then change it immediately (with reference to a MyProfile link), too many can’t manage to login with the provided passwords. They try to type instead of copy and paste. They trigger the alarm we have for too many login attempts. And, if persistent, they require unusual amounts of help to get started.

What I would prefer is the method that is now very prevalent elsewhere, where a person sets both username and password and then receives an activation link via email.

Has someone put together any other plugins that will work with s2member in this way?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

  • I understand your problem, but I don’t understand why you think your proposal would be a solution.

After all, the users would still have to input a password they get from an email. Why would they do this any more effectively than they do with your current setup?

    KTS…
Today, WordPress generates a random “secure” password and sends that. It is very difficult for some to use.

You actually DON’T understand the problem, because you didn’t understand what I am asking for.

Re-read the above and you’ll see that the user gets to determine BOTH the Username AND the Password. So, they already know both parts. They won’t have the problem of dealing with an unusual password. They chose the one they understand. The activation link is the last part of the process. It’s a very common process used elsewhere.

    Ha, ha!

It’s a very common process used elsewhere.

Agreed! But not necessarily better. After all, WordPress’s process is very common!

You actually DON’T understand the problem, because you didn’t understand what I am asking for.

I thought you wanted less administrative hassle. If that wasn’t it, then you’re right.

But, if that was it, you appear to have overlooked something. What happens when the user forgets the password? WordPress sends an email with a new one, and you’re back where you started.

If you don’t have a useful suggestion, why argue with what I asked for?

Thanks and don’t waste any more of your time.

Because I was going to propose an alternative registration process.

But obviously you’re just dead set on this way of doing things, in which case I’ll wish you good luck.

A man goes into a diner and asks for a chicken sandwich.

A customer at another table tells the man he really doesn’t want a chicken sandwich.

The man says again he wants a chicken sandwich.

The customer continues to argue. …

    Problem resolved:
With the right balance of options, s2Member and the “Theme My Login” plugin can peacefully coexist, can provide new members a traditional activation key process, and can also offer them a password reset process where they are in control of their passwords.

At no time does a member ever have to wrestle with cryptic / difficult passwords.
