Unless you’re very conversant with XHTML, PHP, CSS and WordPress tags, you might be better off looking for a suitable theme in the Themes Directory.

Yeah- Ok, so COMPLETE beginner is abit ott. I know some of the basics- but obviously I guess that won’t be enough either- These themes are still as customisable as the one that’s standard, right?
Absolutely! So I’d suggest starting with one that’s got the right kind of layout and then start playing with sidebar displays and colors. Personally, I think the Classic theme makes a better starting point if you’re looking for a theme to customise.

Awesome- You’ve helped a great deal- Also, One more thing- I know that alot of the themes have those “Created by..” things on the footers, do I have to leave them on? I know about the whole CC thing, but do i have to keep it?
If it’s a GPL theme, you can change anything you want – even the “Created by” line in the footer and on the theme’s main stylesheet.

Also, the other website I posted, I’d like to use thumbnails & intro text as a post- Any idea on how to do this?
Some of the themes in the theme directory include a featured posts option – which, I assume, is the kind of thing you’re looking for. Alternatively, you could try looking for a Featured Posts plugin that you can then use with your own theme.
