Never use without a BackUp!

I use a theme (Divi) with a lot of custom widget areas. After creating a child theme with this plugin – without having changed the active theme(!) – it deleted all contents of the custom widget areas of the active theme. That is completely incomprehensible. Why does it change the settings of the active theme? Without backup, it would be a disaster!
