New custom post type called “author”?

Is it possible that you tried registering “authors” in a different location in the site? I was able to register the plural authors without issue on a test install.

Singular “author” is one we have marked as reserved etc, by way of https://developer.ww.wp.xz.cn/reference/functions/register_post_type/#reserved-post-types

But plural should have worked.
