new plugins not detected

i’ve tried to install new plugins to my blog (by uploading them to the server using the FTP, into the plugins folder).
but after upload, i don’t see them in the plugins panel, so i can’t activate them.
what can i do?

note: i use a self hosted wordpress blog.
