New release breaks WordPress

Approximately an hour ago some type of automatic update might have occurred which caused Wordfence to break my site. The site shows a white page with a Server Error message. There was no administrative activity on the account at the time of the problem.

Once I renamed the Wordfence plugin folder the site came back up normally but now my site is unprotected.

How can I get to the bottom of this problem and reactivate Wordfence?

UPDATE: Upgrading to latest PHP version fixed the problem with site instability. Problem solved.
